This winter we had up to 16 show up now we are back down to about 4-5. Our group fluctuates greatly between winter, when the snowbirds are down from the States, and summer, when it’s us die-hard locals. When there is a crowd it’s a bargain and the model actually gets a tip. Now we have decided to just divide her fee up among the number of people showing up, but we never pay less than $3. Of course, that takes someone regular who wishes to get involved in petty cash handling. When we had a crowd the kitty would grow enough that when we only had two people show up, we could still pay our $5. We used to have a kitty that everyone paid into ($5 each). We are lucky to have a model for 3 hour sessions, although it’s really more like 2 and 1/2 since we have a very friendly, chatty group. That seems a nice compromise.Ībout payment…. And then we tell the complainers to move to another area of the room so they have a “new” pose.
In dealing with those who occasionally yearn for poses longer than 30 minutes, we arrange with the model a pose that she can get back into after a break. It worked well for about two months, and now we are back to the usual schedule, but with much better results. The monitor was in charge of keeping us on track. We brushed off Nicolaides’ book and used that as a guide. We recently changed it, with some success. Our drawing format is much the same as yours. Here in my little town of Ceiba (Puerto Rico) we have a long-running life drawing group… five years now. That usually puts us close to two hours….with breaks and some artists interaction and conversations. Two 15-minute poses (some model breaks throughout) Here’s how the two-hour sessions were broken up…ġ0 minutes of quick poses (warm-ups / gestures) Press releases to the newspapers would have been an option except that that was discouraged and I opted to skip that instead of creating any controversy. I used a email mailing list, annoucements to the local artists association and word-of-mouth. Lastly, your method of publicizing and communicating the sessions would be valuable insight. Any input on your method for finding and keeping models would be helpful, too - though our models were plentiful, very reliable and professional. I know that there are model guilds elsewhere - but not in rural, small towns so they were very helpful. Virginia Tech’s Art Department provided support by informing models for us and providing space, etc. During the winter months, though, a sharp drop-off occurred becasue of holidays, weather, scheduling conflicts, etc. Each attending artist paid $5 and we usually had six or more artists attend.
Typically, we paied models $15 per hour for 2 hours of work. Thought a format change might help some….though the local artist population might not be large enough to support it. I recently coordianted the local life drawing sessions here (small college community) and had trouble getting the proper turn-out and/or interest. The foot of the supporting leg is then no longer exactly under the side of the hip but shifts below the center of the hip.Thought I’d get some feedback on the Life Drawing formats used by your local life drawing groups. When a standing person lifts one leg, the center of gravity in the body shifts. If this part is not correct, our pose will not look convincing. This helps the person keep their balance.īesides, we need to identify how the figure we want to draw is balancing its weight. Sometimes, the weight of the body is shared between both legs, and both feet are on the ground.

The other leg can move around and is called the free leg.
When someone stands, they usually have one foot planted on the ground, which we call the supporting leg. For poses, the first priority is to understand which body part is supporting the most body weight. Many start with the head when drawing a figure. Although it’s possible to draw poses and figures without knowing the basics, it can make things more difficult, so it’s not recommended. Drawing poses, it’s helpful to understand the basics of the human body.
